The name

The name is not wrong.It is under-read.

تعيين

ta'yīn

The verbal noun of عَيَّن, from the trilateral root ع ي ن.

Arabic does not separate these meanings. One word carries all four at once, and the group is named for the fourth reading of the third.

Precise determination.

Demarcation. Establishing exactly what a thing is, where it begins, and where it ends so that it can be acted upon rather than discussed.

This is the reading the group is built on. Before a strategy, a system, a qualification or an occasion, somebody has to determine precisely what the work actually is. Most of what goes wrong afterwards was already decided at that moment.

The mark is the letter.

The ع stands where the first “a” would be. It is not an ornament and it is not a stylised letterform it is the root itself, held in the mark, so the meaning is carried rather than explained.
